Alors qu’elle devait être la porteuse de drapeau lors de la cérémonie d’ouverture des jeux de Pékin, Maria Sharapova pourrait céder sa place à la perchiste Yelena Isinbayeva. La raison de cette possible défection est le refus du capitaine de l’équipe Russe olympique de voir sa joueuse porter le drapeau et rester 4 heures au soleil. Shamil Tarpischev prévient : « son bras serait détruit » et « la chaleur lui quittera toutes ses forces ». Celle qui a allégé son calendrier et fait la sourde oreille à son clan qui lui conseillait de ne pas participer aux jeux pourrait bien ne prendre aucun risque 2 jours avant son 1er match. Le capitaine Russe paraît tomber dans l’exagération lorsqu’il affirme qu’« au premier tour, elle ne pourrait même pas jouer à 50% de ses possibilités », même s’il s’en défend en qualifiant son opinion d’« objective », à noter tout de même que la météo de demain mercredi 16 juillet prévoit une température caniculaire de 37° sur Pékin…

Sharapova pulls out of Montreal after opening win

MONTREAL (AP) -- Maria Sharapova withdrew from the Rogers Open after her second-round victory Wednesday because of a shoulder injury, jeopardizing her participation in the Beijing Olympics.

Third-seeded Sharapova of Russia defeated Marta Domachowska of Poland 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 in a match that took nearly three hours. She will have an MRI scan Thursday.

She said her presence at the upcoming Olympics and the U.S. Open, which begins in late August, will depend largely on the results of the tests.

Top-seeded Ana Ivanovic, playing with a swollen thumb, advanced to the third round with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Petra Kvitova, while Serb compatriot and No. 2 seeded Jelena Jankovic cruised through with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada.

Trailing 3-4 in the second set, Sharapova had the trainer look at her right shoulder, an injury that might have contributed to her committing 17 double faults in the match. She eventually lost the second set, then Sharapova won the first four games of the final set to lock up the match.

"It's obviously unfortunate," Sharapova said. "You know, you try to do every little possible thing you can. But at the end of the day when you go on court and you're thinking about aggravating things, you're thinking about an injury, it's not really the way to play."

Sharapova said she considered not coming out for the third set. The shoulder has been bothering her since March when she aggravated it at Indian Wells.

"It's tough to go on court and not be close to even 50 percent," Sharapova said. "I'm too good of a player to go out there and try to fight through something that can eventually become something serious."

Ivanovic, who hurt her right thumb while practicing 10 days ago, refused to use the injury as an excuse for her struggles in her first match since Wimbledon.

Results generally went according to expectation Wednesday.

Sixth-seeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze beat U.S. veteran Jill Craybas 6-2, 7-5, No. 7 seeded Dinara Safina dispatched Russian compatriot Anastasia Rodionova 6-2, 6-4, while Patty Schyder of Switzerland, seeded ninth, came from 2-5 down in the second set to beat Romanian Monica Niculescu 6-1, 7-5.

Two lower seeds lost Wednesday. No. 13 seed Maria Kirilenko fell to Canadian local favorite Stephanie Dubois 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4), and 15th-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy lost 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 to Michelle Larcher De Brito, a 15-year-old qualifier from Portugal.
